Fun to Eat Fruit Goes to Italy

Fun and food top the list when our Fun to Eat Fruit family goes on vacation. Earlier this month we travelled to Italy and ate our way through its beautiful cities and towns. We discovered a variety of fabulous local foods—fruit, in particular—of course!Fun to Eat Fruit samples gorgeous cherries in Lucca, Italy

Fruit of all kinds and colors were readily available and very fresh. On every block in Lucca, then later in Rome, we found a fruit stand or small grocer selling a kaleidoscope of ripe, fragrant, picture-perfect fruit. Fresh peaches, cherries, apricots were our grab ‘n go snacks of choice as we toured the Vatican, Colosseum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and more!

When in Rome…

As the saying goes, when in Rome do as the Romans do! Our meals were rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains, low in red meat, and free of refined foods and added sugars. Basically, we experienced the Mediterranean Diet. It seemed to be a way of life in Italy. We ate real, wholesome food and drank lots of refreshing water. Water was our go-to drink as the days’ temperatures reached 100 or so while we were there.

We discovered Italy with our eyes and gave our tastebuds a workout by noshing on a rainbow of locally-grown fruits, vegetables, and many local delicacies.Fun to Eat Fruit team in a lovely fruit shop in Lucca, Italy

Don’t think for a minute that we avoided all the sensational sweets, breads, wines, and cured meats Italy is known for! On the contrary, we also enjoyed fruit in the form of a daily gelato, lemon cake (prepared with olive oil), vanilla custard with fresh raspberries, berry crostatas and, of course wine! Here are some additional mouthwatering photos of some of the healthy, fresh foods we enjoyed in Italy.
